Draft / Eco Mode Test

Variable opacity texts and ink-saving grids to evaluate readability in economy mode.

Evaluating Draft & Eco Mode Legibility

Draft or "Toner Saver" modes drastically reduce ink consumption by printing in halftone dots or lower opacities. This diagnostic page helps you find the sweet spot between extreme ink savings and acceptable legibility.

Opacity Tolerance

Our cascading text samples show opacities from 100% down to 10%. Identify the absolute lowest percentage you can read comfortably, and configure your software to mimic that lightness.

Halftone Dot Matrix Test

In Draft mode, printers create gray by scattering tiny black dots (halftones). If the dots are too far apart, text becomes jagged. This test confirms if the halftone spacing is smooth enough for reading.

Wear and Tear on Lasers

Operating a laser printer exclusively in Toner Saver mode can sometimes cause excess toner to clump on the drum. Use this test periodically to check for gray background haze, a sign of drum wear.

Fast-Draft Banding

To save time, Draft modes print much faster, often resulting in white horizontal banding. If the banding disrupts the text too severely, you’ll know to revert to "Normal" quality for important drafts.
